There are times when I am sooo slow!!! I have to shake my head!
Elicia Calhoun came to teach with BIA in 2011. Ekahi and I participated in the Sunday workshop, titled “Push to Win”. Elicia shared with us her method for walking the course, verbalizing how you would handle it (to yourself), air handling, visualization and more. We then proceeded to use these techniques of hers, and though spinning with the focus that it took me to understand/practice/implement these, I was amazed that by the end of the day I didn’t notice if there were numbers out or not, using these techniques “cemented” the course in my mind and allowed me to focus on my dog! Very, very cool! Oops, I got side tracked.
The first thing we did at this workshop was run with our dog through a course set up. I WAS NOT connected to Ekahi before I set him up at the line, I was more concerned with “getting it right”. Well, it did not go “right”… at all! I was doing my thing and he was doing his, but we were not doing “our” thing.
He crossed behind me, I couldn’t believe it! After all of the foundation we had worked on, all of the rewards for NOT crossing behind me, all of the many times that he hadn’t! I was flustered as was, which turned to frustration, which turned to subtle anger, which gave Elicia every right to get just as frustrated and angry at ME.
There are many things that I learn fast but this was not one of them. It took someone to call me on it, someone willing to be “honest”, get in my face and tell it like it is. I am thankful!
Edited 8/7/12 – WOW, this is a very old post! Still pertinent but shows how long it’s been since I started working on this site! Hopefully it will be up very soon!
